LIUNA Members March in Support of Workers
Demand Better from Developers and Contractors

Members of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, LIUNA, took to the streets in Jersey City yesterday afternoon to draw attention to the disconcerting business practices from New York-based developer Namdar Group. More than 150 union members were on-hand for the demonstration.
Two of Namdar’s projects–29 Van Reipen Ave and 612 Pavonia Ave–have recently received a stop work order from the Jersey City Construction Code Office for, “exceeding the terms and conditions of permits.” The union also marched to raise awareness of reported worker exploitation issues from Namdar-hired contractors AJD and Concrete Rising.
“Given the nature of construction, it is not always easy to monitor and enforce laws and regulations, but it needs to happen anyway. Lawlessness can not become the accepted norm,” said Laborers Local 3 Business Manager Paul Roldan, which represents construction craft laborers in Northern New Jersey. “Developers and contractors should be held accountable for their actions just like any other industry. We wouldn’t accept this in education, retail, or the medical profession.”
David Johnson, director of LIUNA’s organizing fund, spoke to the crowd about how the erosion of labor and safety standards in Jersey City highrise development hurts not only workers, but also law-abiding developers and contractors who struggle to compete with those who do not face the consequences of illegal business practices.
“This is not a simple oversight, it is a troubling pattern of noncompliance conducted by seasoned professionals. Namdar Group and AJD have extensive Jersey City portfolios and subcontractor Concrete Rising is co-owned by disgraced former permit expediter Tom Bertoli, who in 2022 pled guilty to corrupt interference with federal tax laws,” said Johnson.
