ABOUT LIUNA

With more than 850,000 members across the United States and Canada, the Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA) ranks as one of the largest unions among the AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades. Although most Laborers are classified as either building or heavy highway workers, the union is extremely diverse, also representing workers in public employment, environmental remediation, health care, education, mail handling, food service, shipbuilding, and custodial services.

LIUNA members have played a vital role in building America, as we know it today. Their handiwork is evident all around us. They have helped to construct spectacular highways, bridges, tunnels and subways, to build new factories, stadiums, dams and power plants, and to erect new schools, malls, churches, hospitals and homes.

LIUNA's Eastern Region is nearly 45,000 members strong, made-up of men and women who live and work in New Jersey, Delaware, New York City and Long Island. Although the Eastern Region is the smallest geographically of LIUNA's 10 regions, it takes a back seat to no other in terms of economic importance and overall contributions to the strength of the International.

LIUNA members in the three-state Eastern Region come from every ethnic and religious background. Yet, they are all Laborers, working with a common bond in pursuit of common goals. This diversity promotes coalition building with a broad mix of groups, making the union a dependable ally to those in the public and private sectors who are seeking economic and social progress.

As a union, LIUNA represents workers in many different ways. We operate hundreds of pension, health and welfare, training and apprenticeship funds. We initiate programs to create new job opportunities for our members and guarantee safe working conditions at job sites.

Once an individual joins LIUNA, he or she has access to the best training programs in the construction industry, with state-of-the-art courses available in basic construction skills and environmental, nuclear and asbestos clean-up. From the greenest apprentice to the most experienced journeyman, LIUNA offers the training needed to keep them competitive and gives them every opportunity to advance their careers and continually better themselves.

LIUNA balances its strong attention on organizing, training, and jobs and career development with an equal emphasis on its members' health and safety, and on providing them with an excellent level of benefits to enhance their quality of life. There are many advantages to being a member of the Laborers International Union, but perhaps the most valued one is the comprehensive package of pension, health care and annuity benefits that provide members and their families with personal and financial security.

Through our growing influence in the political arena, LIUNA members also have a strong voice in the Halls of Congress and the State Legislatures of the Eastern Region. The union promotes legislation to protect the health and safety of our members and to ensure that the rights and dignity of all working Americans are preserved.

Through its various membership services and benefit programs, the Eastern Region of the Laborers International Union is not only making the American Dream a reality for working people, it is also building better communities and a better union construction industry.

Today's LIUNA is a good neighbor, a good business associate, and a strong advocate for working men and women – a new breed of building trades union, leading the labor movement into a new century.
