Health and Safety Fund urges Motorist to take it slow through work zone
To the 1,093 families that lost a loved one in a highway work zone accident last year, National Work Zone Safety
Week is more than just another commemoration. It's a chance to save lives by advising people to proceed with
caution when traveling through roadway construction.
At a recent press conference of transportation and construction officials, New Jersey Laborers' Health and
Safety Fund Director Joseph McNamara recently described the dangers that close to 9,000 heavy and highway
construction laborers face in New Jersey.
"Our members are often working in very small work areas, and are exposed to speeding cars and trucks with
sometimes no more protection than an orange traffic cone or barrel," said McNamara. He called for greater
police presence to protect work zone employees, and urged people to slow down when approaching roadway construction.
The Laborers' Health and Safety Fund joined the NJ Department of Transportation, the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration, the Associated General Contractors of NJ, the Utility and Transportation
Contractors Association, and the Construction Industry Advancement Program of NJ in observing National
Work Zone Safety Week, which was held from April 7-13th.
